Successful Aspen Re-generation Project

SYRCL is pleased to report on our first successful citizen-engaged Aspen Regeneration Project! This was a two-fold volunteer project that partnered with American Rivers and Tahoe National Forest.  With American Rivers, volunteers were trained to conduct a rapid assessment of meadows at Bear Valley Meadow.  The following weekend, they completed an assessment at Loney Meadow.  Everyone had such a great time learning how to read a meadow, the services it provided, and to identify its ailments that need restoration.

The second part of the service project was in partnership with Tahoe National Forest and included an overnight camping trip at Rucker Lake.. This project included the removal of encroaching conifers from Aspen tree patches that were struggling for light.  With such a small group of volunteers, we accomplished so much!  We restored an overall of 3.5 acres combined from Rucker Lake and Loney Meadow!!

If you’re feeling as though you missed out from this amazing restoration opportunity, don’t you worry as we have five restoration sites on the Annual Greater Yuba Clean-Up on September 17, 2011 and over thirty clean-up sites to choose from.  To register please go to https://yubariver.org and sign-up!  Also, we are anticipating another day out in the field with Tahoe National Forest at Pierce Meadow later this month, so keep an eye out for the date as it is to be determined. Hope to see you on September 17 as we come together as a community to protect and restore the Greater Yuba River!
