We protect and RESTORE the Yuba watershed

Restoration Projects

River

The Lower Yuba River has been dramatically altered by hydraulic mining sediments, dredger mining, dams, levees, and alteration of flows. SYRCL is leading the effort to rehabilitate the lower Yuba River for salmon, steelhead, riparian habitat, and wildlife.

Meadow

Mountain meadows are areas of extremely high value for natural water storage, water quality, and wildlife habitat. Unfortunately, meadows throughout the watershed are in some state of degradation. See what SYRCL is doing to restore these meadows.

Forest

Many forests in the Yuba watershed are unhealthy; overstocked with small trees and brush, they are now susceptible to high-severity wildfire due to fire suppression and historic timber harvesting practices. SYRCL is partnering with a number of organizations to implement forest health projects across the Yuba watershed.

We ADVOCATE on behalf of the river and EDUCATE our communities. We INSPIRE action.

About SYRCL

The South Yuba River Citizens League was founded in 1983 by grassroots activists determined to protect the South Yuba River from dams. Ultimately, SYRCL won permanent protections for 39 miles of the South Yuba River under California’s Wild and Scenic Rivers Act.

Today, SYRCL is the central hub of community activism to protect, restore, and celebrate the Yuba River watershed. With decades of achievements, 3,500 members, and 1,300 active volunteers, SYRCL is doing great things for the Yuba watershed. Together, we are extending our powerful coalition from the Sierra to the sea.

The Yuba Watershed and the Bay-Delta Plan: Interlinked Plumbing and Management

In response to the precipitous decline of native fisheries, the State of California is looking at solutions to restore some of the freshwater flows that the Delta and fish need. This process is commonly referred to as updating the Bay-Delta Plan. The current focus is on the Sacramento River and San Joaquin River, including the Yuba River. The Yuba to the Bay-Delta connection is critical for Yuba salmon because they depend on both ecosystems to survive.
