Ensuring River Safety: The Role of SYRCL’s River Ambassadors

Share with Your People

During River Season, every weekend, more and more people in search of both natural beauty and a quick cool-down flock to the South Yuba River, eager to immerse themselves in its emerald pools and sunbathe on its majestic granite boulders. The allure of this natural wonder draws visitors from all corners, seeking relaxation and adventure. However, as we all have come to realize in the last five years or so, this surge in popularity has its downside, with litter and waste threatening to harm the very beauty that attracts so many.

At popular spots like HWY 49 and Bridgeport crossings, the scene on a sunny Saturday is bustling. Early birds arrive as dawn breaks, and, by midday, the parking lots overflow with cars lining the roadsides, sometime precariously parked and blocking emergency access. From families with their dogs to groups with floaties and coolers, everyone unloads their gear for a day by the river.

Enter SYRCL’s dedicated River Ambassadors.

Clad in beige vests and stationed under pop-up tents, these volunteers are on hand to provide visitors with trash bags, doggie bags, and valuable advice on safety and hiking trails. Their presence is not just about cleaning up; it’s about stressing river safety and fostering a culture of respect and responsibility towards the environment.

In collaboration with California State Parks, the River Ambassadors program was established to ensure the South Yuba River remains clean, vibrant, and safe for everyone. Now in its thirteenth season, the program has made a significant impact, engaging with over a thousand people last season alone and removing over 3,500 pieces of trash and over 250 piles of dog waste.

But their role goes beyond ensuring the river we love and its beaches stay pristine. Need sunscreen? Forgot your dog waste bags? Looking for a trail map? The River Ambassadors have got you covered. Their unwavering commitment to river stewardship and safety embodies the spirit of community and care that we cherish at SYRCL.

The unregulated flows this season have also highlighted the unpredictability of the Yuba River. To raise awareness of the potential dangers, River Ambassadors will be distributing bright red river safety bandanas, courtesy of the Yuba River Safety Cohort. These bandanas serve as a reminder to prioritize safety while enjoying the river’s beauty.
