SYRCL is proud to announce Anya Cooper-Hynell, a recent Nevada Union graduate, as the 2018 recipient of the Environmentalist of the Year Scholarship. This scholarship, administered by SYRCL, is offered annually to graduating high school seniors who have demonstrated a commitment to the environment. Each year, one young river steward from our community is identified for their dedication and awarded with a $4000 scholarship.

Anya expressed her sincere gratitude for the award. “Our community and my love for the river has created my sole purpose of protecting this river and all other nature for everyone to love like I have. Being selected for the SYRCL scholarship for me, means that an organization which I admire believes in me to help make a difference. This gives me both motivation and hope for my future of being an environmental guardian.”

A passionate Yuba River advocate, Anya will be attending University of California Santa Cruz in the fall to study Mathematics and Earth Science. She was president and founder of the NU Outdoor Club, co-president and secretary of Eco-NU, a member of the Social Justice Club, Interact, the NU Environmental Committee, and a regular volunteer with The Sierra Club, SYRCL, and Sierra Streams Institute.

To date, seventeen scholarships have been awarded to outstanding youth in our community, students distinguished by their academic and extra-curricular talents.  Funds for the scholarship are raised by the community at large through the annual Brains of Nevada County Quiz Night hosted by SYRCL and produced by staff and dozens of volunteers.

This past March, over twenty-five teams dueled in the famed trivia night to compete for the glory of trivia masters.  Teams comprised of neighbors, friends and coworkers helping to raise thousands of dollars to support the fund.  Among the teams participating this year were: KVMR, BriarPatch Coop, members of the Sierra Nevada AmeriCorps Partnership, The Union, YubaNet, Nevada County, Telestream, Coldwell Banker Grass Roots Realty, Sierra Center for Spiritual Living, Sierra Watch, Nevada City Winery, AJA Video Systems, Nevada County Cannabis Alliance, and many more!  Tables fill quickly; if you would like to reserve a spot for your team in 2019, please contact Daniel Belshe at daniel@yubariver.org.  Additional Quiz Night details can be found on our website here.  Quiz Night will take place Saturday, March 8, 2019 at the Peace Lutheran Church in Grass Valley.
