Spark your passion for science and local climate action. Be a part of a once-in-a-lifetime outdoor expedition.

SYRCL is excited to announce a FREE five-day summer science expedition for local 9th-12th graders to engage in local climate action and watershed restoration efforts!

Apply for our Youth Outdoor Leadership Opportunity (YOLO) Expedition, and if you’re selected, spend a week on a fully funded research expedition studying meadows in Tahoe National Forest alongside real scientists and other students.

Are you a family member or student who wants to learn more? Watch the short video to see what past expeditions have looked like!

Surrounded by the gorgeous Sierra Mountains, you’ll get a chance to conduct hands-on field work and meadow restoration research. You’ll be collecting the data needed to help answer some of California’s most pressing environmental questions!

You’ll also get a chance to connect with your teammates throughout the expedition, discuss important environmental justice issues, hone your leadership skills and make new friends while exploring the beautiful landscapes that make up our North Yuba Watershed.

The YOLO program extends from June 13 to June 17, 2022 and is open to high school students from the Bear and Yuba watersheds. There is both a day and overnight option, with the day option traveling to and from the field every day and the overnight option featuring camping out in the field for the duration of the program. Food and travel expenses will be covered by SYRCL – the day program includes snacks and lunch and the overnight program includes all meals. The majority of the program will be spent outdoors in beautiful Loney Meadow, located in the Tahoe National Forest, just 30 minutes outside Truckee.

To qualify for participation in SYRCL’s YOLO Program, students must be able to attend the initial orientation over the June 3rd weekend. Interested students should be comfortable with physical work in the outdoors and hiking. Ideal candidates are those who are creative thinkers and motivated workers, and excited to work in a team dynamic with peers and local scientists.

Applications for the 2022 YOLO Program are due May 13, so if you want to want to be included in this amazing and exciting adventure, apply today!
