SYRCL’s River Ambassador Program Seeks Outdoor Enthusiasts to be Part of the Solution
The South Yuba River Citizens League’s River Ambassador program was developed in 2012 in partnership between SYRCL and California State Parks to ensure that the Yuba River is safeguarded amidst its growing visitation. Over half of the South Yuba River corridor is public land managed by the California Department of Parks and Recreation (State Parks) and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), and, especially with recent staffing challenges, neither agency has the capacity to engage with the many visitors the river sees each summer.
Each year since, from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, SYRCL’s River Ambassadors step up as local volunteers who care deeply about the river and their community. These dedicated individuals share their passion for the Yuba by speaking one-on-one with visitors at crossings, beaches, and trails, encouraging safe, responsible, and eco-friendly river use. Using a warm, friendly, and respectful approach, River Ambassadors educate the public about the impacts of litter and pet waste, the risks posed by broken glass, and the very real threat of wildfires. They also offer helpful safety tips and local insights to enhance each visitor’s experience while fostering a shared commitment to river stewardship.

This year, with the river running high, fast, and cold, public education on safe recreation is more important than ever. River Ambassadors play an essential role as a first line of defense, helping to prevent accidents and safeguard lives. Volunteering in this program is a meaningful way to give back, connect with others, and show pride in your community while contributing to the preservation of one of Nevada County’s most cherished places.
Sign up for one day, one weekend, one month, or the whole river season. In-person training is scheduled for May 15th with additional shift specific trainings happening throughout the summer.
