SYRCL’s Quiz Night 2025 Was A Wild Time

On Wednesday, March 19, 2025, SYRCL held its annual Quiz Night Event at the Wild Eye Pub in Grass Valley. Started in 2002, Quiz Night is the annual fundraiser for SYRCL’s Youth Environmentalist of the Year scholarship and its year-round River Education programs.

This year, 15 teams competed in a rollicking, no-holds-barred trivia extravaganza consisting of four rounds of questions covering topics like pop culture, sports, music, geography, and, of course, science!

Emily Wilson, SYRCL’s Community Engagement Manager, held down the fort as Quiz Mistress extraordinaire, while volunteer Marleen Sharon and SYRCL’s Communication and Engagement Director Daniel Elkin speedily tallied the answers. SYRCL’s Education Director Monique Streit took over during intermission to update the crowd on past Youth Environmentalist of the Year Scholarship recipients and talk about the importance of supporting future environmentalists.

It was a head-to-head hard-fought competition throughout the event as the brains of Nevada County showed off their trivial knowledge.

And with trophies like this on the line, who could blame them?

FIRST PLACE TROPHY

Ultimately, Team Down With The Quizes was triumphant, barely out-answering second place finishers The Mental Dwarves. There was a tie for third place, with Team High Barrz narrowly taking home the prize.

But truthfully, the real winner of Quiz Night was SYRCL’s Youth Environmentalist of the Year Scholarship. The Environmentalist of the Year Scholarship is offered each year to a graduating high school senior pursuing a degree in an environmental field (science, advocacy, education, art, communication, technology, sustainability, etc.). We have offered this $4,000 scholarship ($1,000/year for four years) annually to local students since 2002.

SYRCL’s next big fundraising event for our Education Department is Wild for the Yuba on July 11th, where our community can once again come out and come together, enjoy great food and great company, and bid on incredible auction items generously donated by area businesses and others.

Special thanks also go out to the staff at The Wild Eye Pub for being such gracious hosts and keeping everyone well fed and hydrated.
