SYRCL Makes 313 Railroad Avenue Its Forever Home
SYRCL is excited to announce that we closed on our purchase of 313 Railroad Avenue in Nevada City on Wednesday, March 31–a space we have been renting since 2013 (see photos below).
Though the building’s previous owner was able to keep the rent low for as long as he could, SYRCL faced a projected rent hike that would have forced us to relocate within the next three years. Thanks to historically low interest rates and a motivated seller, SYRCL was able to negotiate a sale that resulted in monthly payments comparable to our current rent.
“Purchasing the building made the most financial sense for us,” said Melinda Booth, Executive Director, “especially given our programmatic growth and 24+ staff members. It also helps to provide economic security by stabilizing one of SYRCL’s biggest costs—space.”
Though many organizations have decided to shift to remote work permanently after more than a year of pandemic-related restrictions, SYRCL has chosen to invest in a physical space within the community. “SYRCL is a grassroots organization. The community is a big part of who we are and we can better embrace that with a bricks and mortar office. This is why we are so happy to have a permanent place adjacent to downtown to call our own,” said Booth.
Planning for the Future
SYRCL’s neighbor, Sierra Harvest, is continuing to lease office space on the second floor. The future of the third office suite is yet to be determined. The extra square footage gives SYRCL the flexibility to move some offices upstairs to accommodate growth and help make their vision of a Yuba River Welcome Center a reality.
While the Welcome Center is currently only a vision for the future, if realized, it would serve as a much-needed resource to educate the growing number of tourists about river safety and public land etiquette before they visit the Yuba River. This announcement comes right before what is anticipated to be another record-breaking year of visitors to Nevada County.

I’m so happy to hear about this. I was a member of the founding docent group at Bridgeport in 1991. Such wonderful memories and so glad the ‘beat goes on’.
What an exciting and important step for SYRCL: permanence; a concrete … well, wooden … center in the community ; commitment; a gathering place; and a space to grow further into.
