Help Us Install Groundwater Wells
On Tuesday, September 17th and Thursday, September 19th, we are planning some field days to install groundwater wells in two meadows — Castle Valley and Round Valley — up near Donner Summit.
These are beautiful meadows along several popular hiking trails, including the PCT and Castle Peak Trail.
We are seeking roughly 5–6 volunteers of able body to help pack in heavy equipment (up to 50 lbs per person) for distances of up to one mile.
Once onsite with the necessary equipment, we will install groundwater wells which requires auguring, digging, and/or rock prying.
No training is necessary.
Volunteers will need to wear durable outdoor clothes and hiking boots. Please bring plenty of water and food for the day.
Groundwater well installation is an important component of planning for a restoration project. These shallow groundwater wells (4–8 ft in depth) give SYRCL windows of insight on how water is present and moving in the meadow over time. Through monitoring groundwater levels in the meadows, SYRCL can better understand the meadow’s hydrology and, in combination with other monitoring efforts, plan restorative actions that will improve the overall ecological function of the meadow.
