SYRCL, along with American Rivers, California Sportfishing Protection Alliance, California Dam Removal, Gold Country Fly Fishers, and Northern California Council of Fly Fishers International recently signed on to a letter to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, National Marine Fisheries Service, and Yuba Water Agency.

The letter, dated April 11, raises concerns about the potential harm from striped bass at the Daguerre Point Dam Nature-Like Fishway Project.

  1. The Daguerre Point Dam Nature-Like Fishway Project aims to improve fish passage on the lower Yuba River at Daguerre Point Dam while maintaining water supply and hydraulic mining debris retention functions.
  2. The Draft Plan for the project does not address the potential harm caused by the migration of striped bass into the protected salmonid spawning and rearing refuge upstream of Daguerre Point Dam.
  3. The low-gradient Fishway is intended to provide volitional passage for green sturgeon and Pacific lamprey, but it may also allow striped bass to migrate above Daguerre Point Dam if not physically prevented.
  4. Striped bass pose a threat to the resident O. mykiss fishery upstream of Daguerre Point Dam, which is a popular destination for anglers and serves as a genetic reservoir for threatened California Central Valley Steelhead trout.
  5. There is a need for a greater involvement of other stakeholders (the public and non-governmental organizations) in developing the next draft.
