Growing Green Workshop Series: Free monthly mini-workshops on environmentally responsible cannabis cultivation

SYRCL is hosting a free “Growing Green for the Yuba” talk, on Tuesday, June 13 at the Holbrooke Hotel in Grass Valley. Greg Porter with Porter Engineering, Inc. and Zeno Acton of Acton Arboriculture will present Ecological Perspectives on Forest Management. Offering theories and solutions for erosion control and ecologically-minded perspectives on how to improve and maintain plant, tree and vegetation health through proper forest management, participants will gain insights into how to manage their grow sustainably. Bring your questions, because presentations will be followed by a panel Q&A.

Co-sponsored with Nevada County Cannabis Alliance and Sweetland Garden Mercantile, this event kicks-off a free monthly mini-workshop series for anyone interested in learning about best management practices for cannabis cultivation that will safeguard the Yuba . SYRCL is able to organize these free events thanks to a grant by the Rose Foundation.

Future talks will take place the 2^nd Tuesday of the month, June through November, at the Holbrooke Hotel.

In July, the workshop will cover Water Conservation and Delivery Systems. Trey Sherrell, Environmental & Regulatory Compliance Consultant will offer clarity on current regulations with his wealth of knowledge from his time with the Central Valley Water Quality Control Board. John Whalin with Sierra Plumbing Supply will provide simple-solutions and cost-effective suggestions on water system improvements that can be easily implemented at your own site.

Future workshops include: Plan Ahead for Healthy Soil,  Plan Now for Rain Capture and Grow Clean, Get Certified.

“We are committed to providing information and educational resources about the cumulative impact of cannabis cultivation across our watershed. By highlighting accessible practices to cultivators, we hope that we can all work together to protect the river,” said Rachel Hutchinson, SYRCL’s River Science Director.

The environmental impacts of unregulated, large-scale cannabis cultivation are real. The overuse of chemical fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides pollutes the water and poisons wildlife. Illegal water diversions result in dry creeks. Deforested and poorly graded land damages habitat for native fish and wildlife. So-called “trespass grows” on public lands wreak havoc on the landscape.

SYRCL’s vision is that people will see that well-regulated agriculture – which is what cannabis cultivation could be – should not harm water quality, fish and wildlife. By addressing the sustainable cultivation issue through collaborative leadership, science, stewardship and education, we can educate each other to ensure cannabis is grown in an environmentally responsible and sustainable way.
