We are still recruiting 10th-12th graders and graduating seniors interested in this FREE five-day summer science expedition. This year students will install aspen enclosures at Loney Meadow, conduct biological studies, collect data, take beautiful hikes, and learn about the importance of healthy meadows and meadow fringe aspen ecosystems. Now that warmer weather is upon us, outdoor enthusiasts have to grapple with tick season. Ticks are well known for spreading a number of zoonotic diseases (or diseases that can be transmitted from humans to animals), namely Lyme Disease. However, California is armed with an unlikely defense against the spread of Lyme Disease: western fence lizards.
Sierra Newts begin migrating to breeding streams in January and can be seen near streams and creeks until about May. If you are interested in newts and want to find this colorful creature in its own habitat, now is the time. Details
Through this Biodiversity Conservation Grant, SYRCL will be able to provide hands-on meadow restoration experience to high schoolers. Students will help in restoration efforts while learning about field monitoring techniques, aspen ecology, and current threats. Details
