Salmon in the Air

If you journey to the water’s edge in the Lower Yuba River, you’ll witness splashing tails, the cleaning of redds, and the end of a great journey from the ocean to source.  It’s the start of salmon spawning season.  Each year thousands of Chinook salmon and steelhead trout return to the Yuba River to reproduce.  And salmon aren’t just in the river this month, they are flying through the airwaves, as you’ll see below, in the various radio and TV interviews about SYRCL’s Salmon Expeditions.

In an effort to restore salmon numbers to the Yuba River and to educate the next generation of river conservationists, SYRCL runs Salmon Expedition Tours. These tours teach students about fish habitat restoration, salmon migration and life cycle, and the importance of salmon in our watershed.

In 2019, Yuba Water Agency has funded all 4th grade students in Yuba County to participate in Salmon Tours this fall. In the last two weeks, Salmon Expedition teams have taken more than 400 kids on the Yuba, running rafting trips twice a day.
