SYRCL is preparing for a second year of planting riparian trees at Hammon Bar of the lower Yuba River and needs help from volunteers willing to spend some summer days in the Yuba Goldfields locating sources of willow and cottonwood cuttings. The Hammon Bar Riparian Enhancement Pilot Project successfully planted 1,650 cuttings last fall, and 4,000 more will be planted in November this year.  The project is the first ever rehabilitation project on the lower Yuba River.  In addition to enhancing conditions at Hammon Bar, the pilot project leads to more extensive riparian enhancement on the lower Yuba River. The project is funded by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Anadromous Fish Restoration Program, with support by Western Aggregates, Teichert and the Bureau of Land Management. SYRCL makes this happen because of our dedicated volunteers!

Riparian trees are too rare on the lower Yuba River due to poor natural reproduction resulting from the legacy of hydraulic mining debris, lasting impacts of dredger mining, upstream dams, and the alteration of flows. Riparian trees provide important habitat for wildlife and fish. For salmon and steelhead habitat, riparian trees provide food, cover and structural complexity of habitat, especially when large trees become woody material in the river. Riparian vegetation provides habitat and forage for insects which are the primary food for juvenile salmon and trout. They also provide cover by overhead shading and interaction with flow.

Volunteers will be trained in the identification of native willow species and will be expected to provide a minimum of three days this summer working with SYRCL staff and other volunteers in the Goldfields.
