Stellar Views Await You on a Hike with Hank Meals, May 10

Join SYRCL May 10 on an educational and stunning 7-mile round trip hike to Penner Peak led by Hank Meals; local historian, archeologist, author and authoritative Yuba River trail guru. We’ll begin this terrific day at Loney Meadows, a beautiful meadow at 6,000’ in the northernmost part of the Grouse Ridge Roadless Area. Indigenous people used this area for travel, trade and hunting for thousands of years. In the historic period the meadow was used to graze cattle and there was once a small dairying operation here. More recently SYRCL has been involved in an aspen restoration project along Texas Creek and there will be several more opportunities to participate this summer.

We’ll continue along Texas Creek to Bullpen Lake and climb a small ridge to Lower and Upper Rock Lakes which were originally dammed to provide water for hydraulic mines located many miles downslope.

From here we’ll circumambulate Upper Rock Creek and climb glacially polished granite to Snort Hill, also known as Penner

Peak, at 7,264’. The peak is rocky and treeless with tremendous views. To the north are the Sierra Buttes, English Mountain, Bowman Mountain, Red Hill, Loney Meadows, Rock Lakes, etc. (maybe even Mt Lassen will be visible). To the south are dramatic views of Culbertson and Penner Lakes, Fall Creek Mountain, Grouse Ridge and many far away peaks. To the east are Sand Ridge, Black Buttes, Mount Lola and plenty more.

The hike to Snort Hill is approximately 3.5 miles long (one way) and is a climb of 1,264’. Hikers should be in good shape.
