Quiz Night is Back

SYRCL’s annual Quiz Night scholarship fundraiser is back!  Since 2002, we have been gathering as a community for a night of revelry to raise support for our community’s high school graduating seniors (with the exception of 2020). Each year, we award a $4,000 scholarship to support a local college-bound student on their path to becoming an environmental steward.

This year’s Quiz Night provides an opportunity for a Virtual “Reunion” with SYRCL as well as family, friends, and old acquaintances.  Create your own dream-team and join us for an evening of brain-scratching trivia, laughter, and the chance to win prizes.

Quiz Night will be held on Friday, March 26th from 6-7:30 pm and co-hosted by SYRCL’s former executive director, Janet Cohen (aka the Quiz Mistress) and Community Engagement Manager, Daniel Belshe. Special guests include SYRCL’s executive director, Melinda Booth, our new Education Manager, Monique Streit, and our old friend, Flo the Salmon.

Tickets are $20 per player and proceeds support our Youth Environmentalist of the Year scholarship

What do you need to play?  Quiz Night virtual edition will use the all-too-familiar Zoom app and a new-to-us app called Aha. What you need to play are two devices; we recommend one computer and one smartphone, but almost any combo will do. Zoom will allow you to hear and the smartphone will allow you to submit your answers.

How will it work? You can play as a team or roll solo as a “Lone Wolf.” When you register, you will enter your team name and then join that team the night of the event when you sign in.  This year is a little different than in years past in that each member of the team can submit answers individually. Only correct answers will go toward the team total.  This will allow people who are on a team but physically distant to still play together–that way we can reunite with friends and family who may live far away from one another.

Will there be prizes? At SYRCL’s Quiz Night even the worst of trivia players can win big. Prizes are awarded to the Quiz Night Winners, the Losers, and the Most Technically-Challenged. The Ringer Award will go to the highest overall score and the Dead Weight award to the worst overall score.  Prizes include a guided hike along the Yuba River,  ‘Headed to the River’ SYRCL Gift Bags and more.

“We are dying for a reunion with our river family and hoping SYRCL’s Annual Quiz Night can help reconnect us a bit more while still making a huge difference supporting our community,” says Daniel Belshe.

We are hoping to see the faces we miss so much and welcome new ones to what promises to be a fun and engaging night for a good cause.

Quiz Night 2019

On Friday, March 8, 2019 twenty-four teams vied for the prized title—Champions of the Brains of Nevada County Quiz Night. After more than three hours of laughter, mind-bending trivia, and conviviality, the cream of the crop rose to the top. The KnowBuddies, for the fourth time, clinched the title and claimed their place at the front of the pack. The Wise Crackers got the “Most Spirited” award, and Daniel’s Birthday Baboons received the coveted prize for lowest score.

This event is certainly a night to be remembered, with competition, wild costumes and team spirit.
