National Volunteer Week is April 18-24, 2021, and gives SYRCL the opportunity to recognize the impact of volunteer service and the power of volunteers to tackle some of our community’s greatest challenges. We want to recognize and thank SYRCL volunteers who lend their time, talent, and voice to make a difference. As a grassroots organization, SYRCL volunteers are at the heart of our work. We all come together with a common goal–to protect the Yuba River and its inhabitants.
In the spirit of Volunteer Week, SYRCL is proud to feature two of our long-time volunteers, Ellen Celphane and Don Wiljamaa, who have called this area their home for over 14 years.
This duo has worked hard for more than six years to protect our river and our river communit. Ellen and Don have worn many volunteer hats at SYRCL, including greeting visitors at the river as River Ambassadors, showing films during our Wild & Scenic Film Festival (Don’s favorite!), participating in the annual Yuba River Cleanup, postering, preparing mailings, and doing data entry.
Even during COVID, each month they have helped pack boxes for our Wild & Scenic Film Festival On Tour Partners.
When asked why they continue to choose to return year after year, they told us they want to protect the beautiful Yuba River.
“We have been consistently impressed by the magnitude of all the programs and the wonderful, caring, competent staff. We love everything about SYRCL. It’s a great pleasure to help awaken environmental consciousness and to protect and restore this precious place on Mother Earth that our community has been given to steward.”
Thank you, Don and Ellen, so much for all your service. You are both SYRCL rockstars!
