DOOM ON BROOM!
Join the River Avengers for the Scotch Broom Challenge
River Avengers are back in action this spring for our annual Scotch Broom Challenge! Join SYRCL’s Restoration Team and make our community safer and healthier!
WHAT: Scotch Broom Challenge
WHERE: Hoyt’s Crossing / Indepedence Trail (meet at the Indepedence Trailhead)
WHEN: Sunday, April 2nd — 9am – 1pm
WHY: Scotch broom is a non-native invasive weed that has become rampant all over the Sierra foothills – especially Nevada County. It is highly flammable, whether it is dead or alive, so removing it reduces the risk of catastrophic fire. The plant thrives on disturbed soils and is able to quickly re-sprout after anthropogenic management practices such as grazing. Scotch Broom reproduces by seed and seeds can live in the seed bank for up to 80 years.
Scotch broom does not provide any wildlife value because native animals will not eat or use it. In fact, it displaces native and beneficial vegetation that provides value to our ecosystem. When it forms dense stands, it impedes the movement of wildlife and livestock and degrades their foraging and living habitat.
SYRCL is partnering up with the Fire Safe Council to reduce the risk of wildfire and help make our landscape healthier by eradicating invasive Scotch broom. To learn more about how you can join the fight against broom on your property, explore the Fire Safe Council website here. There are weed wrench loan programs and Special Needs Assistance Programs if you are physically and financially unable to remove the Scotch broom.
The event will begin with an educational introduction to Scotch broom and tool use by AmeriCorps Restoration Coordinator, Courtney Hudson. We will hike into the trail and spend a few hours removing Scotch broom and enjoy a lunch break together on the trail.
WHERE TO MEET: Indepedence Trailhead
