Scotch Broom Challenge

Scotch Broom Challenge 2024

Date:
Time: to
Location: Volunteers will meet at the Rood Center (950 Maidu Avenue Nevada City, CA 95959) and caravan to the site.

SYRCL and Bear Yuba Land Trust will be leading a Scotch Broom Challenge adjacent to Mountain Bounty Farm on Friday, March 29th, from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

Why get involved? Because we’re all about the power of teamwork and science-backed action! Scotch broom might seem harmless, but it’s wreaking havoc on our native plants and cranking up the fire danger in our communities. By pitching in, you’re not just pulling weeds – you’re making a real difference in protecting our precious ecosystems.

This isn’t just any ol’ clean-up job. We’re talking about rolling up your sleeves and diving into hands-on conservation. And guess what? It’s gonna be a blast!

Don’t miss out on this chance to make a positive impact and hang out with fellow nature lovers. Sign up now and let’s show that pesky Scotch broom who’s boss! See you on March 29th – let’s get our hands dirty for a good cause!

Please contact Reed Herbison, SYRCL’s Restoration Coordinator, for more information at: Reed@yubariver.org or call him at 530.265.5961 ext 205

Volunteers will meet at the Rood Center (950 Maidu Avenue Nevada City, CA 95959) and caravan to the site, which is an approximately 45-minute drive.

SYRCL and BYLT staff will train volunteers how to use weed wrenches to carefully remove the Scotch broom from root to tip from the soil, causing as little disturbance as possible to small mosses and wildflowers during their springtime bloom and inhibiting new Scotch Broom plants from sprouting during the next growth season. Volunteers will be using weed wrenches provided by SYRCL but are encouraged to bring small loppers or hand snips if they have them.

What to bring:
•Plenty of water
•Snacks or lunch
•Sunscreen
•Sunglasses

What to wear (Think protective clothing for getting into the weeds!):
•Comfortable boots
•Long sleeves
•Pants
•A hat
•Work gloves  (SYRCL will also provide gloves)
