Favorite Yuba spot? “Impossible to say! It’s a whole world of favorite places.”

Meet Dodie, featured as our latest Member Spotlight.

Dodie Johnston is a former board member and longtime supporter of SYRCL. She moved to Nevada County in 1976 and immediately fell in love with the Yuba and the respite it generously gave. She shares that love, passing it on to her children and grandchildren and always taking her out of town visitors to walk Yuba trails so that they, “can know where the heart of Nevada County lies.”

When speaking about the early days of SYRCL, Dodie explains, “to me, my family, and friends the Yuba was comfort, excitement, a place of breathtaking beauty, and also in need of care. We still feel the same way.”

Her favorite Yuba activities include kayaking below Parks’ Bar, greeting spring wildflowers, swimming at Edward’s Crossing, and draping herself on a curvaceous rock to doze.

We asked Dodie what she would do with a magic wand, and her one inspired wish for the Yuba is shared by many…it’s a message of stewardship and passion.

She says, “I wish everyone who visited the Yuba could do so in an attitude of awe and joy and partnership and gratitude and would treat it as the sacred place it is. I’ve visited, boated, and swum in many rivers, and I’ve never met a river as hospitable as our Yuba.”

Thank you, Dodie– from SYRCL and everyone who enjoys the Yuba!
