Now Hiring: River Captains

River Captains help train and oversee River Ambassador volunteers to educate visitors about river safety and etiquette at assigned river crossings, including the Highway 49 bridge, Bridgeport, and Purdon Crossing. River Captains are also responsible for collecting programmatic data about visitors, trash collected, and interactions. While on-the-ground duties occur on weekends, River Captains can expect to spend two hours midweek in meetings and completing administrative duties, such as data entry, scheduling, and supply restocking River Captains average 15 hours per week.

Water Use in Agriculture: Exploring Residential and Cannabis Water Consumption  

As we navigate California’s water usage landscape, it’s essential to understand how different sectors contribute to our overall demand for water. A recent study by the Berkeley Cannabis Research Center conducted across 91 Humboldt and Mendocino Counties watersheds brought to light interesting findings regarding residential water use and licensed cannabis cultivation. The study was released in February 2024.

Caught on Camera! Aspen Wildlife Game Cameras in Action

For the last three years, SYRCL has placed game cameras within aspen stands in the upper Yuba watershed. We have cameras throughout the North, Middle, and South Yuba.

These animals use the aspen for foraging or hunting grounds, bedding for young, or even as back scratching posts. In our placement of game cameras, we want to gauge the diversity of animals that utilize these aspen stands, as well as the frequency.
