SYRCL is recruiting 100 volunteers to be River Ambassadors at the South Yuba River this summer. You can become a river steward and help protect the Yuba River from being “loved to death” by helping to educate guests about river safety and etiquette. Get involved today!

Congratulations to our 2022 Environmentalist of the Year Scholarship Winner – Vanessa Richards

Vanessa Richards, a Ghidotti Early College High School Senior, is the 2022 recipient of the Environmentalist of the Year Scholarship. This scholarship, administered by SYRCL, is offered to graduating high school seniors who plan to pursue a degree in the environmental field. Each year, a young river steward from our community is awarded a $4,000 scholarship.

Update: NYFP to Receive Funding for Forest Restoration

The North Yuba Forest Partnership is set to receive $34.8 million in federal funding to support the implementation of forest restoration treatments in the North Yuba River watershed. The treatments this funding will support, such as ecologically based thinning and prescribed fire, are designed to promote forest conditions that are more resilient, while reducing the risk of catastrophic wildfire and restoring watershed health and native biodiversity.

Youth Outdoor Leadership Opportunity (YOLO)

SYRCL is excited to announce a FREE five-day summer science expedition for local 9th-12th graders to engage in local climate action and watershed restoration efforts!

Apply for our Youth Outdoor Leadership Opportunity (YOLO) Expedition, and if you’re selected, spend a week on a fully funded research expedition studying meadows in Tahoe National Forest alongside real scientists and other students.

Update: Van Norden Meadow Restoration Project

On April 1st, 2022, Nevada County, as a lead agency, released the Draft IS/MND CEQA Document for the Van Norden Meadow Restoration and Recreation Project, which is a project collaboration between the South Yuba River Citizens League and the Tahoe National Forest.

Sierra Newts – Amorous Amphibians

Throughout most of the year, the brilliantly colored Sierra newt (Taricha sierrae) lives on land, hunting and eating insects, earthworms, and slugs and hiding from any potential predators in the moist soil beneath rocks and logs. In the winter and spring, however, these members of the family Salamandridae become aquatic, returning to the pond or stream where they were born in search of a good time.
