The highly anticipated November 8, 2022 General Election is now just days away. All active registered voters in California should have received a vote-by-mail ballot sometime in mid-October – and over 2 million* individuals statewide have already cast their ballot.

Counties participating in the California Voter’s Choice Act, such as Nevada County, have provided even greater flexibility and convenience for voters by allowing voters to choose when, where, and how to cast their ballot.

For individuals still contemplating which candidates and measures to support in this election, we’d like to provide a few quick facts about what you should know heading into the General.

On your ballot you will find 7 ballot propositions, statewide candidates for U.S. Senate, Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, Controller, Treasurer, Attorney General, Insurance Commissioner, Member of State Board of Equalization, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, your U.S. Representative in Congress, State Senator, State Assembly Member, Supreme Court Justices, as well as other local candidates and local measures by County.

Of note in Nevada County is Measure V, which, if passed by voters, would generate approximately $12 million annually for 10 years through a half cent sales tax for critical emergency services and other general government services, including wildfire prevention, improved evacuation routes, enforcement of fire safety laws, enhanced emergency communications and many other community priorities.

SYRCL formally endorsed Measure V on August 28, 2022 with unanimous board support. Support of this measure was deemed important for SYRCL because the threat and impacts of catastrophic wildfire to our community and the watershed are extreme. Proactive measures must be taken as quickly as possible to reduce the threat of severe wildfires and this measure provides resources to support this need.

SYRCL works on forest health and fire resilience projects throughout the watershed and understands the benefit forest health projects can have on safeguarding communities, wildlife, water supply infrastructure, and the environment from catastrophic wildfire.

Other statewide ballot measures include issues such as reproductive freedom, online and mobile sports betting outside tribal lands, funding for air pollution and wildfire prevention through personal income taxation, and a referendum on the 2020 ban on flavored tobacco.

Other high stakes ballot items include the Governor’s race, congressional races, and state legislative races. Ultimately, all candidates on the ballot play a part in shaping the future of California, whether big or small.

As an organization founded by grassroots activists and centered in community activism, SYRCL encourages all members of the community to make their voice heard and to cast a ballot in the November 8 General Election.  A list of early voting/dropbox center locations locally is available HERE

Your vote matters and California depends on you.
