Amelia Heinritz, 2020 Recipient of SYRCL’s Environmentalist of the Year Scholarship

SYRCL is proud to announce Amelia Heinritz, a Nevada Union High School Senior, as the 2020 recipient of the Environmentalist of the Year Scholarship. This scholarship, administered by SYRCL, is offered annually to graduating high school seniors who have demonstrated a commitment to the environment. Each year, one young river steward from our community is identified for their dedication and awarded with a $4000 scholarship.

An enthusiastic environmentalist, Amelia has been serving as one of SYRCL’s River Education interns for the past year, and has been extremely active in both local and regional environmental stewardship movements. As a participant in NU’s Green Academy, Eco-Club and the Green Focus Conference, she became involved in efforts to advocate for statewide environmental conservation policy, and continues to be a regular volunteer with SYRCL. She will be attending Sierra College this fall.

Amelia expressed her excitement and gratitude for being the 2020 awardee. “Working with Rachel Lubitz, the River Education Manager at SYRCL, has been such a valuable experience! Receiving the Environmentalist of the Year Scholarship has encouraged me to continue looking for ways to gain more experience with conservation related issues. It could make finding a volunteer or internship position with an environmentally focused organization possible. I would love to work in an ocean science field related field and am particularly interested in addressing the amount of plastics in our coastal and inland waterways.”

To date, nineteen scholarships have been awarded to outstanding youth in our community, students distinguished by their academic and extra-curricular talents. Funds for the scholarship are raised by the community at large through the annual Brains of Nevada County Quiz Night hosted by SYRCL and produced by staff and dozens of volunteers.
