Scotch Broom Challenge Successful

Thank You River Avengers!

On Saturday, March 31st, an enthusiastic group of volunteers met at Purdon Crossing to attack and eradicate Scotch broom along the road side leading down to the South Yuba River. The fifteen hardy volunteers were greeted with sunshine and a plethora of the invasive and highly flammable broom to tackle.

Volunteers pulled the Scotch broom with weed wrenches, and then mulched the plant with loppers right where the plant was pulled. This method is meant to stabilize the soil where the plant was removed, and inhibit new plants from sprouting the next season.

Scotch broom is slowly moving from North San Juan and creeping down Purdon Crossing towards the Yuba River, though it has yet to reach the river at Purdon Crossing. Thanks to our volunteers, our efforts have helped to stop the invasion and will hopefully inhibit the nasty weed from moving into the riverside along our beloved Yuba!

An enormous thank you to all the devoted and enthusiastic volunteers that came out to lend a hand. Together, we removed over two acres of Scotch broom. Your hard work has helped reduce fire danger and will allow native plants and wildlife to return to the site.

Thank you to California State Parks for partnering with us at Purdon Crossing on the South Yuba River. We also thank the Fire Safe Council of Nevada County for hosting Scotch Broom Challenges each year throughout Nevada County.

Did you miss the Scotch Broom Challenge but would still like to be involved? Have no fear, we have other exciting opportunities for you!
