Show Up for Wild Yuba Salmon at Upcoming Public Meetings with Army Corps

Share with Your People

The Army Corps is coming to town to solicit public input about the “Yuba River Ecosystem Restoration Feasibility Study.”

If you care about restoring wild salmon, we strongly urge you to attend these important meetings. This is your chance to let the Army Corps know how important restoring wild salmon is to a healthy ecosystem. The staff will collect written comments at the meetings and until November 9th.

The Corps’ press release states: “The meetings will present an outline of the study’s purpose, a tentative schedule and provide the first opportunity for public interaction with the project team. The Corps and our non-Federal partners, the Yuba County Water Agency, will be on hand to discuss the study and answer any questions about the process and accept public comments.”

The Army Corps owns and operates Englebright and Daguerre Point Dams, which block salmon and steelhead from their historic habitat in the upper Yuba River. For years, SYRCL and our partners have advocated for the Corps to develop a plan to restore fish passage over these dams.

Recently, Congress authorized the Corps to conduct a $3 million feasibility study of actions to restore the Yuba River. We are pleased that the study is underway and that the public will have a chance to submit comments; we also commend YCWA for agreeing to share the costs of this study.

It is important for the Corps to hear from the public your expectation that this study be comprehensive in answering how fish will be able to pass over the dams – and that the study must include dam removal and dam lowering scenarios. We are concerned that the priority of fish passage is conspicuously absent from their recent press releases.

Please plan to attend one of the three public meetings scheduled in Nevada City, Marysville and Sacramento:

Wednesday, Oct. 28, 1 – 3 p.m.
John E. Moss Federal Building Stanford Room,
650 Capitol Mall, Sacramento, CA 95814

Wednesday, Nov. 4, 5 – 7 p.m.
