The Yuba River Needs YOUR Voice at the State Capitol May 11th

CA Rivers Day_Facebook post_Monday, May 11th, the South Yuba River Citizens League, Friends of the River and dozens of organizations representing rivers from across the state will convene at the State Capitol.  Our aim is to build public awareness and educate the state’s political leaders in order to promote rivers, conservation and smart water options for California. Know and Go!

  • Who: River supporters
  • What: Give rivers a stronger voice by building a more powerful river protection movement in California. Please see the list of activities below.  Sign up to paddle or schedule a meeting with one of your legislators.
  • Cost: All day-time events FREE, Friends of the River dinner tickets: $50
  • Where: State Capitol, Sacramento (Discovery Park for the 8am Pancake Paddle)
  • When: Monday, May 11, 2015 8am-7pm—full day of activities
  • Caravan from SYRCL to Sacramento:  Paddlers meet at the SYRCL office at 6:30am, non-paddlers meet at 8:30am.  Please contact Jenn Tamo at Jenn@syrcl.org or 530-265-5961 ext. 201 for more information.  Note: SYRCL is unable to provide transportation, but we hope people will meet at the office to carpool and caravan.

The 2015 California Rivers Day activities include:

Pancake Paddle 8am at Discovery Park

To visibly demonstrate support for our rivers, the day will begin with a pancake breakfast at Discovery Park, and a short paddle down the Sacramento River to the base of the Capitol Mall. Boaters will then march up the Mall to join the Rivers Fair at the Capitol described below. All are welcome and we will also invite legislators, state resource agency staff, and members of the media to join us. FOR and partner groups have the equipment, professional guides, and insurance to safely organize this paddle, but feel free to bring your own boat.

Legislator Visits

Meet with legislators_CA Rivers Day

From 9:00am to 4:00pm we will be meeting with legislators and the Governor’s Office.  We will focus on Assembly and Senate leadership, key committee members and legislators representing our most threatened rivers. Each appointment will be set up in advance to include experts, advocates, employers, and citizens from each member’s district.

California Rivers Fair at the Capitol

Outreach_Flo_Hot Summer NightsInformational booths representing 25+ river organizations and river oriented businesses will set up on the West Steps of the State Capitol from 10am-4pm. The event is open to the public and will include games and music. Meet organizations from across the state who are working to convey the value of healthy rivers for water quality, recreation, wildlife, and the economy.

 

 

 

Noon Program & Press Event

How the Kids Saved the Parks_kids_capital_stepsAt noon, participants will gather for a short program and press event on the West Steps of the Capitol. Supportive elected officials and state agency leaders will address how healthy rivers matter for all Californians.  This will be followed by a roll call of rivers and river groups present.

 

CA State Capitol_ CA Rivers DayCapital River Awards

The evening will conclude, 5:00pm to 7:00pm, with a reception just steps from the Capitol to celebrate our hard work and mingle with river advocates from around the state. Sacramento Caravan Logistics

Join SYRCL staff and caravan from the SYRCL office on Monday, May 11. We will leave in two shifts. If you would like to participate in the 8am Pancake Paddle from Discovery Park to the State Capitol, we will leave the SYRCL office at 6:30am. For people interested in tabling at the CA Rivers Day Fair and meeting with legislators, we will leave the SYRCL office at 8:30am. We are unable to provide transportation, but we encourage people to meet us at the office at either of these times so that we can caravan together.
