Hallwood Side Channel and Floodplain Restoration Project

The Hallwood Side Channel and Floodplain Restoration Project, funded by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, will improve habitat in the Lower Yuba River for Chinook salmon and steelhead trout. Other project partners include cbec eco-engineering, Cramer Fish SciencesSouth Yuba River Citizens League (SYRCL), Teichert Materials, and Western Aggregates. In an area mostly consisting of steep cobble embankments, the Project has the potential to enhance or create up to 170 acres of seasonally-inundated riparian floodplain habitats, more than 3 miles of perennial side channels and alcoves, and more than 4 miles of seasonal side channels.

September 2016 Public Information Meeting

In early September 2016, the Project Team hosted an informational project meeting for local residents and regional stakeholders at the Hallwood Women’s Club. About 50 people attended and provided valuable questions and feedback about the Project.

An update on project permitting…

Initial environmental and cultural resource assessments are nearly complete. A number of permitting efforts are underway. The completed Environmental Assessment / Initial Study (EA/IS) is being prepared in accordance with the CEQA/NEPA process and is anticipated for circulation in October of 2016.


Pre-implementation monitoring update

Initial results from monitoring experiments completed by Cramer Fish Sciences fisheries biologists are available! Key findings:

  • Non-native predatory fish (largemouth bass and sunfish) have been observed within the large backwater pool at the lower end of the Project reach.
  • Rearing habitat quality dramatically alters residence time and survival of juvenile Chinook salmon.
  • Individual predators may be having a disproportionately large effect.
