Student Qualifications

  • Bear and Yuba Watershed 9-12 grade students*
  • Available to attend and orientation and work 5 days in the summer
  • Be willing to work as part of a team.
  • Comfortable with physical work and hiking. 
  • Creative thinkers and motivated learners. 
  • Excited to work in a team dynamic with peers & local scientists. 

*Preference will be given to students from Nevada, Yuba, Placer, Sierra and other counties within the Yuba Watershed boundaries, but other students in the Central Valley region may still apply.

Application Process

  • April 4 – Applications Open
  • May 17 – Applications Due.
  • May 20 – Receive notification from SYRCL as to whether or not you’ve been selected. 
  • June 3-4 – Mandatory orientation location and times TBD
  • June 13-17 – YOLO Expedition 

Tentative Day Program Itinerary

2022 YOLO Dates: June 13–17, 2022 

Monday – Thursday: Meet at the SYRCL office at 8 am and return at 5pm. We will travel to our meadow restoration sites to engage in fieldwork surrounding: 

  • Install fencing for an aspen enclosure  
  • Water quality monitoring 
  • Restoration activities such as collecting and/or planting native riparian vegetation to ensure health of stream-channels. 
  • Conducting biological surveys to assess meadow restoration success 
  • Hikes to highlight the impacts of human activity on meadow health or the correlations of meadow health to watershed health. 
  • Team-building, personal reflection and leadership skills development 

After the week of activities, we will wrap up with Friday Fieldwork in the morning and spend the afternoon by the Yuba River; return to the office for pick-up.

Additional Program Information

Most of the time will be spent outdoors at Loney Meadow in the Tahoe National Forest, 30 minutes outside of Truckee. 

The Day Program includes lunch and snacks, and the Overnight program includes all meals. Food and transportation services are covered (excluding personal expenses).
