Downtown Nevada City and Grass Valley were abuzz with an army of helping hands and bright smiles this past weekend. Months of visioning, logistics preparation, film screenings and art submissions culminated in the 15th Annual Wild & Scenic Film Festival. This five-day extravaganza was powered by more than six hundred volunteers who collectively worked 3,000+ hours to produce this meaningful and inspiring event.
The history of volunteerism at Wild & Scenic is astounding. A cohort of SYRCL’s volunteers have assisted in every fest production since its inception— 15 years total! They’ve witnessed how this event has grown from 2 to 10 venues. They’ve seen the expansion of the event into Grass Valley, and then throughout the world with the On Tour program.
Over the years, the Wild & Scenic Film Festival has become SYRCL’s largest annual fundraiser, which supports the protection and restoration of the Yuba River year-round. And, this festival would not be possible without institutional knowledge of experienced, veteran volunteers as well as the generosity of first-time volunteers.
Each year, volunteers are involved in every step of the production process from programming and content generation to execution. Each At the Edge poster and postcard you saw around town promoting the festival was hung by volunteers spreading the word. All materials used during the festival were packed by volunteers who prepared supply bins during the weeks leading to the event. With the dimming of each light and the screening of each film, a volunteer was there to orchestrate its smooth operation.
Each role, whether it be center stage or behind the scenes, is integral to the mission of the festival which is to use film to inspire activism and heal the earth. This weekend, we did just that. We came together and we built something that inspires, excites, and encourages our inner activists. SYRCL’s staff and board would like to extend our sincerest thanks to the volunteers who made it possible. Thank you for your assistance with another phenomenal festival and for facilitating an extraordinary start to this new year. See you at next year’s fest! Save the date: January 11-15, 2018.
