Laura Wilcox Scholarship Applications Due Jan. 11

Scholarship available for graduating Nevada Union students

The Laura Wilcox scholarship is administered by SYRCL in honor of Laura Wilcox, daughter of Amanda and Nick Wilcox, the Nevada County teenager killed in the January 10, 2001 shooting at the Nevada County Behavioral Health facility.  The scholarship is offered annually to graduating Nevada Union High School seniors that have demonstrated a commitment to the environment and to Laura’s values. To date, fifteen $4000 scholarships have been awarded to local students. Laura’s legacy continues, as each year we identify young river stewards and recognize their dedication.

Applications are now being accepted and are due on January 11th.

Delphine recently reflected on how the scholarship has impacted her course of study. “I am so honored to have received this scholarship because through the knowledge and experience I am gaining in my studies, I am starting to establish the dreams and goals I have for the environment and the planet. This scholarship is very special. It highlights the fact that this planet we live on is a beautiful place and not only does it need to be protected from destruction, but that anyone, no matter their age, can help.”

On graduating from Nevada Union High School in 1999, Laura won a scholarship from the Sierra Club with an essay she wrote about restoring salmon to the Yuba River. After her death, the Sierra Club donated the remaining $4,000 of her scholarship to SYRCL to endow a scholarship in her name. So far, fifteen $4000 scholarships have been awarded to local students.

Laura’s father, Nick Wilcox recently noted, “Laura had particular affection for the Yuba River and spent many lazy summer afternoons soaking in its beauty.  We are so pleased that SYRCL has chosen to honor her with the scholarship.”

Delphine also commented on her connection to the legacy of “I feel the spirit of Laura Wilcox in this scholarship very strongly because this award is made for making a positive change not only in the community but in the world. Through the generosity of the Laura Wilcox SYRCL Scholarship, the next generation of young activists will be able to start changing the way we look at the world and create a path towards a more sustainable future.”

Applications are due on January 11th.
