Defined-by-the-Line_01The Wild & Scenic team is proud to announce its official theme for the 2017 Festival. After careful consideration, lots of brainstorming, and some good ol’ fashioned fun, we have arrived at our theme…At the EdgeWe are thrilled to get to work curating a festival of film, art, music, workshops, and celebrations to honor this theme.

Special guests Gary Snyder and Tom Killion played an integral role in developing 2017’s theme. Their inspirational poetry and art guided our process and we love the multiple interpretations this phrase invokes. It certainly addresses some of the more pressing matters at hand, including climate change, species extinction, social and environmental justice – genres all well represented at Wild & Scenic. It is also representative of the adventure films we screen – bringing to mind being at the edge of a great wilderness or a path not taken – always a highlight for our festival attendees!

breaking pointAdditionally, the phrase embraces the activists and innovators featured in many of our documentary films who are at the edge of progress with new advances in alternative energy, sustainable farming, and the chance to make decisions that will have a positive effect future generations.  And, of course, there is a link to our attendees who are often at the edge of their seats throughout the festival!

While all films will be considered, we are especially interested in films that broadly interpret our theme this year, At the Edge. Selected films will be in contention for a variety of awards at our Awards Ceremony during the weekend of the festival, including Best in Theme. Check out last year’s award winning films.

Solar ImpulseFollowing the January film fest in Nevada City, CA, Wild & Scenic goes on tour and travels to more than 150 locations across the globe; more than 35,000 people annually are inspired by these films.

You can look forward to exciting and informative film and speaker content related to our theme, At the Edge, at the 15th annual Festival happening January 12-16, 2017. Open submissions run from May 15 through September 25, 2016. Visit www.wildandscenicfilmfestival.org/submit to submit your film.
