Meet Diana and Joe Abrell, featured in this week’s Member Spotlight!

Diana and Joe are passionate River People and long-time SYRCL members, having joined in January 2001. We are deeply grateful for their sustained membership support.

Tell us a little about yourself: We bought the lot we live on 38 years ago, moved here and built our house 18 years ago. Before retiring we lived in various states ranging from Maine to California. We enjoy outdoor activities including hiking/backpacking and flat-water kayaking. We are founding members of and are active in the Sierra Nevada Canoe and Kayak Club, and are also active in the Foothill Fibers Guild (handweaving). Other hobbies include traditional target archery and reading.

What’s your favorite activity at the river? Taking family and company swimming.

Why should people visit the river? To experience and appreciate a beautiful, clean and natural area.

Why did you join SYRCL? We greatly appreciate what SYRCL is doing to protect the river and the watershed.

What would you say to someone who is considering becoming a SYRCL member? SYRCL has a long history of being one of the most successful organizations dedicated to preserving and protecting a river and its watershed – the Yuba. SYRCL is also very effective in educating the public about environmental responsibility through the Wild and Scenic Film Festival and other activities.

If you had one wish for the river, what would it be? To develop efficient passages for salmon around Daguerre Point and Englebright Dams, and to establish public access along most of the river.

Why is it important to protect the river? The opportunity to experience unspoiled natural areas is essential for one’s mental health. Forever protection of the Yuba watershed and river are extremely important for the quality of life in this area.

Thank you, Diana and Joe Abrell – from SYRCL and everyone who enjoys the Yuba!

Diana and Joe are proud to be a SYRCL members. We invite you to join them and thousands of other amazing River People by becoming a member today. To find out more, contact Lyndly Martin, SYRCL Membership Coordinator, at (530) 265-5961 ext 220 or lyndly@syrcl.org.
