Meet Hilary, featured in this week’s Member Spotlight!

Hilary is SYRCL’s star office volunteer, and has been a member of SYRCL for 11 years. Her support each month helps SYRCL remain a powerful advocate for the Yuba.

When did you become involved with SYRCL?
November 2003.

What was your involvement?
I first started volunteering in 2006, when I served breakfast at the film festival. The next year I started volunteering in the office and have continued in the office and at events ever since!

What have been some of your most memorable experiences with SYRCL?
The most memorable experience was the moment when California Secretary for Natural Resources, John Laird, walked into a packed room at the State Capitol to announce that the South Yuba River State Park would not be closed after all. This was the result of the Save Our Parks campaign, of which SYRCL played an important part. I was also very honored to be awarded SYRCL Volunteer of the Year 2012. It was very gratifying to be recognized and appreciated.

What is your personal connection to the Yuba River?
The Yuba River is a gem that makes this area very special. In the summer I go to the river once a week and I always come away feeling calm and happy. When I’m at the river I am grateful for everything that SYRCL has done to keep it pristine and beautiful, and volunteering is a great way to say thank you.

How long have you lived in Nevada County and what brought you here?
I have lived in Nevada County since 2000. I came to house-sit for a friend and loved it so much I stayed.

Thank you, Hilary – from SYRCL and everyone who enjoys the Yuba!
