We are seeking enthusiastic conservation-minded people to commit to a year of service to protect Sierra natural resources and sustainable communities. During the year, SNAP members will gain skills and technical training, mentor with outstanding environmental leaders and receive an education award at the successful completion of service.

This is an opportunity to be part of a unique program for conservation and restoration work in the Sierra Nevada (SNAP), complete with training opportunities, stipend, a modest federal health package, and a graduation award.  SYRCL is looking for candidates grounded in the community and Yuba River watershed.

SYRCL invites qualified candidates for two positions which make invaluable contributions to the Yuba River watershed.  The River Monitoring specialist will coordinate the 12th year of citizen-based water quality monitoring and other science projects supporting assessment and restoration.  Click here to view the full job description.

The Watershed Restoration Specialist will coordinate volunteer participation in a variety of restoration projects and also contribute to watershed coordination with California State Parks and many other partners.  Both positions will represent SYRCL and SNAP in outreach to the community through presentations to schools and a variety of public events.  Click here to view the full job description.

Background:

In the fall of 2006, the Sierra Nevada Alliance received a grant from CaliforniaVolunteers to administer the Sierra Nevada AmeriCorps Partnership (SNAP) to help build the capacity of Alliance Member Groups and complete on-the-ground restoration work throughout the Sierra.  The mission of the SNAP program is to assess and restore impaired watershed habitats and to increase community stewardship of Sierra Nevada watersheds through education and volunteerism.

SNAP places 27 full-time AmeriCorps Members at different conservation organizations and natural resource agencies throughout the 400-mile long “Range of Light.”  From Mt. Whitney to the Feather River, Members have contributed to Sierra watershed health through a variety of service projects including conducting invasive species removal, stream bank stabilization, environmental education presentations, river clean-ups, trail building, and water quality monitoring.

Since 2007, more than 135 SNAP Members have served at 32 Sierra conservation organizations and agencies to restore over 8,034 acres of habitat, monitor over 924 ecological sites, educate over 86,000 people, raise more than $42,000 dollars for Member service projects, and recruit over 10,700 community volunteers to serve their local Sierra watersheds.

Responsibilities& Projects:

Members will serve full-time from January 23-December 21, 2012. Projects & responsibilities will vary depending on the individual’s service plan, but will be based on watershed restoration and assessment, watershed education and outreach, and volunteer recruitment and coordination.

Placement Locations:

AmeriCorps Members will be placed with a Sierra-based conservation group/agency. The list of 2012 Host Sites is available at www.servingthesierra.org.

2.       Email your resume and a 1-2 page cover letter stating your interest in the SNAP Member position and your best qualifications for the position to snap@sierranevadaalliance.org.

Applications are being accepted now!  Apply by October 17, 2011 to be eligible for the first round of interviews for all 27 SNAP Positions.  Applications received after October 17th will only be considered for positions remaining open after the first round of interviews has been completed.
