Registration is NOW OPEN for Your Favorite River Clean Up!

August 25, 2011

REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN for your favorite river clean up event on-line at www.yubariver.org.  The 14th Annual Greater Yuba River Clean-Up and Restoration Day takes place September 17, 2011 as part of the 3rd Annual Great Sierra River Clean-Up sponsored by the Sierra Nevada Conservancy from 9 am – 3:30 pm.  Volunteer at one of SYRCL’s 35 clean-up and restoration sites and build camaraderie with your friends and family while cleaning up trash or helping to restore meadows and trails in our cherished watershed!

This year we have several restoration projects you can help with that involve invasive species removal and erosion control in addition to the usual trash pick-up.  Sites include: Bennett Street Meadow in Grass Valley, Independence Trail, Edwards Crossing and Kentucky Ravine at Bridgeport.

Over half a million visitors enjoy the South Yuba River each summer. Therefore, the river needs our help to remove all the trash carelessly left behind from the banks and in the water before the fall rains wash the refuse down toward the ocean.

After the morning clean-up, join us at Bridgeport Crossing, in the South Yuba River State Park for a free celebration honoring YOU and other volunteers from 12-3:30pm with a free barbeque lunch, Haute Trash fashion show and – new this year—the 1st Annual Rock Skipping Competition open to all ages.

Generally, about 1/3 of our volunteers are under 18 years of age. Scout troops, youth groups, and school groups can all register together and work at the same site as long as you register early.  This is a great family event, too!

In the past 13 years, over 126,000 pounds of trash and recycling have been removed from the watershed by over 5,500 volunteers from Donner Summit on down to Parks Bar on the Yuba and Bear Rivers and Deer, Wolf and Dry Creeks.  “With hundreds of volunteers, sponsorship from local businesses, and partnerships with public agencies and landowners, SYRCL and our members demonstrate their dedicated stewardship of our watershed through their actions and we applaud everyone’s involvement,” states event coordinator Miriam Limov.  “We simply couldn’t clean up the tons of trash each year without all this community support.”

Registration for your favorite clean-up sites and for the Rock Skipping Competition is NOW OPEN and many of the popular sites fill up quickly so go on-line TODAY and register at www.yubariver.org.

The river, watershed and SYRCL thanks you!
